and women. back then, senator barack obama opposed the fcc's proposal. so did senators joe biden and hillary clinton. but now, president obama's man at the fcc -- they were friends in law school -- apparently wants to do what the republicans couldn't do under president bush, and to do it behind the scenes, out of sight, with no public hearings. several public interest groups, civil rights organizations and labor unions opposed the move, and last week, senator bernie sanders and several of his colleagues called on chairman genachowski to hold off. bernie sanders is an outspoken opponent of media consolidation. he sees it as a threat to democracy. once the mayor of burlington, vermont, he served 16 years in the house of representatives and was recently re-elected to his second term in the senate. he's the longest serving independent in the history of congress. he was in new york earlier this week and we met for this interview. welcome. good to see you again. >> good to be with you, bill. >> this is a strong letter, inspired one of your colleagues in the senate says, by you. what's the beef? >>

that back in 2007, your then senatorial colleague, barack obama wrote a strong letter to the republican chairman of the fcc who wanted to change the rules, just like genachowski is doing now. and he condemned the very tactics that his own fcc chairman is employing today. >> absolutely. and we hope the president will get involved in this issue. so i don't-- to be honest with you, i don't know the internal dynamics of why what is happening is happening. i know you got a couple of republicans on the board, who are very sympathetic to moving forward toward more consolidation. but why genachowski is taking the position he is, i don't know. but i think it would be very helpful. and we will try to get the president to remember what he said four or five years ago. >> you said a moment ago that you recall these hearings that were held across the country. there was a lot of people, there were a lot of people attending. there was a lot of anger at those hearings. 3 million of those folks wrote letters to the senate and the fcc. there doesn't seem to be the opposition this time. what has changed? >

president obama. this guy's totally shameless right, about being an arm of the republican party. doesn't this sort of prove it? >> i mean it shows that he's -- he's just interested in impacting the republican party and getting his guy in the ring than fox is about covering it. it has been reported before that roger urged chris christie to run and then there was a report in 2011 that he had urged petraeus. but this recording really takes it to another level because although casey mcfarland and -- they say it was a joke, you can hear her on the recording over and over again you know trying to get information to bring back to roger. it is not like it was just a quick joke at the end of an interview. she asks repeatedly. they talk about would murdoch bankroll it and maybe petraeus was sort of brushing some of it off. but at the same time it seemed like she was really trying to get information to give back to roger who for their own belief, wanted petraeus to run. >> bill: the fact is though, this sort of proves the

republicans called their bill to repeal obama care? i do. it was an act to repeal the job killing health care law. now, the whole job killing thing has always been a bit of a talking point myth. a nonpartisan study of the very similar health insurance mandate enacted six years in massachusetts showed, quote, no evidence of reduced employment as a result of health reform there. still, that argument, the whole job killing obama care thing, sent the owner of red lobster and a bunch of other very carb friendly restaurant chains on a hapless misadventure in corporate protest that culminated today in a public and embarrassing and informative way. back in october, company called darden restaurants announced they were putting more workers on part-time status in stead of full-time to see if they would be able to limit the cost of complying with the new health reform law. under the new law, big companies like darden have to either offer health insurance or pay a $2,000 fine for each full-time employee. over 30 employees who ends up using public subsidies to buy health care. you catch those words there,
